Twin Mom Review: What you actually need for Twins (in Denmark)

There are so many baby products out there, so as a first time foreigner parent in Denmark (to twins no less), it felt like a huge task to figure out what I needed, how many (do I need 1 or 2!?), what brands were the best, should I buy new or used – the list goes on and on. I can’t say I’m an expert, but I did a lot of research when buying things for our twins and now that they’re 2 years old, I definitely know what worked for us and what didn’t.

Here is a quick list of my “must-have” twin gear. If you click on the title, it will take you to the description below.

And a few additional things I won’t give a whole review to, but just a few words:

  • Car seats: What you should buy really depends on your specific needs, and that could be a whole post in itself. If you get the Bugaboo Donkey, I can recommend finding a model that can also snap in there (with the car seat attachment).
  • Baby bouncers: I can really recommend having two of these! Model and type doesn’t really matter though.
  • Duvets: This deserves its own post! [Coming soon]
Double Stroller

Brand & Model: Bugaboo Donkey

New/Used & Price: Used, ~8000kr including tons of accessories

Review: Almost every single twin family I know or see in Denmark has the Donkey stroller. There are a few other options that can work, but particularly for the “barnevogn” stage where they are laying down, or when you want to snap in the car seats, it truly is the best. Just note that it is not the easiest to fold up for car or air travel!

Pro Tip: There are a few colors that experience a lot of fading, black being the main one, so that is something to look out for when buying. However, all cloth parts of the stroller are washable, which is great when you’re buying used.

Baby Lifts

Brand & Model: Najell SleepCarrier

New/Used & Price: Used, ~300-400kr

Review: There are various lifts that will fit in the Donkey, but these are the most common model in Denmark and extremely easy to find second hand. I just recommend looking for ones that have the handle joining piece for safety, especially if you’ll be carrying two of them at a time. These are super useful for taking your babies in and out of the stroller, either when you arrive somewhere and need to go inside, or if you, like me, need to take them up and down stairs at home without an elevator.

Pro Tip: They are washable when you take out the cardboard bottom, which again is great for buying used!

Slyngevugge

Note: There has been a recent update in guidelines for letting babies sleep in the slyngevugge. Be sure to read the details here before using one! It is recommended to get a flat mattress if your baby/ies will sleep in the swing.

Brand & Model: Various – twin models

New/Used & Price: Used, 1500kr (including stand and motor)

Review: If you are about to have twins and you are wondering if you really need to buy one of these, I will tell you that this is the single best purchase we made. It made putting them down for naps, a truly daunting task, much, much easier. Make sure you also get a motor unless you want to stand there bouncing them! Some twin families get two separate ones to increase the weight limit (from the motor/stand), but for us it wasn’t a problem as we stopped using it before we hit that.

Pro tip: You can put the Najell carrier into this, so you can put them to sleep in the carriers and then take them out and put them in the stroller or wherever you need to take them. I never really did this but I know other moms who did!

Breastfeeding Pillow

Brand & Model: Peanut & Piglet pillow

New/Used & Price: Used, 300kr

Review: This is THE twin breastfeeding pillow and it’s for a reason. It’s very structured so it’s really great for when they’re all floppy in the beginning. I was lucky enough to find a used one with several covers, which was great as they were often spitting up or pooping on it.

Pro tip: For some people, it sits too low, but then you can just prop it up on the bottom with some blankets or pillows (definitely don’t sit hunched over!).

Twin Z Pillow

Brand & Model: Twin Z

New/Used & Price: Used, 300kr

Review: Something you might not know you need, but you do. This is great for laying the babies on in the newborn phase to sleep (supervised!), it can also be used as a breastfeeding pillow, and is excellent if you need to give both babies a bottle at the same time. When they were a bit older, we put it in their room to prop them up on when we read to them at night, and it’s also what I later used for nighttime breastfeeding as it was softer and easier to use in different positions.

Pro tip: This brand is not readily available in Denmark and the shipping price is very steep. If you can’t find the Twin Z second hand, you may be able to find some similar alternatives. You could also get 2 singular breastfeeding pillows, which would be able to serve some of the same functions.

Crib(s)

Brand & Model: Kravlegård (any brand works, ours was 80x80cm)

New/Used & Price: Second hand, free!

Review: I was very much in doubt about whether they should sleep together or apart when we brought them home, but we were lucky enough to get a kravlegård for free from a twin group so we decided to try that first. They were actually already sleeping together in the hospital from the first night, so it worked well to keep the same setup when we came home. This worked great until we had to stop swaddling them, at which point they were bothering each other too much. We then transitioned to separate full-sized cribs when we put them in their own room at 5 months.

Pro tip: Some twins actually sleep much better when they are together! The kravlegård is a great way to do that, and if at some point you don’t want to use it for sleeping anymore, it can still be used as a typical “playpen” type setup in your home.

Baby Carriers

Brand & Model: Single carrier: ErgoBaby 360 Mesh: Double carrier: MiniMonkey

New/Used & Price: Used; ErgoBaby: 350kr each; MiniMonkey: 600kr

Review: In total we had 6 different carriers: two wraps, two Ergobaby single carriers, one Minimonkey twin and one Weego twin. The single carriers were definitely the best, as it’s easiest to just carry one baby at a time, but if you don’t have two adults, of course that isn’t possible. If you would like a double carrier, the Minimonkey was nice once they were older and could hold their necks. Prior to that, I would recommend using a wrap in a twin position, which is more supportive. I did not like the Weego twin as it does not put them in a proper position for their legs or their necks.

Pro tip: The ErgoBaby carriers are also great for travel and we still have them for when we need to get on/off the plane, try to get the kids to sleep while traveling, etc.

Activity Mat & Gym

Brand & Model: That’s Mine nest; Franck & Fischer stativ

New/Used & Price: Used; Free; 200kr

Review: We used the big nest from That’s Mine together with our activity toy holder. This nest has low sides that can either be tied up or let down so it’s flat, which was super useful as our twins got bigger and needed more room. The Franck & Fischer activity toy holder is perfect for twins as it is big enough to fit two babies underneath. I’d highly recommend both.

Pro tip: The Franck & Fischer activity toy holder actually collapses together so it’s easy to store or even take with you on the go!
